How to Select Material for Custom Industrial Gears

Custom gear material selection is one of the most critical steps to guarantee gear service life, transmission stability and operating performance. Wrong material choice may lead to premature tooth wear, pitting, cracking or broken teeth, which causes unexpected downtime and maintenance cost.

The selection mainly depends on 4 key factors: load condition, rotation speed, working temperature and corrosion environment.

C45 Carbon SteelC45 is widely used for low-load, low-speed gears. It can be surface hardened, with good machinability and cost advantage. It fits general non-critical transmission parts where heavy shock load does not exist.

SCM420 Alloy SteelSCM420 is a popular case carburizing steel. After carburizing and quenching, the gear surface gets high hardness for wear resistance while the core remains tough to resist impact. It is the standard choice for most reducer gears, medium to heavy load applications.

17CrNiMo6 Alloy Steel17CrNiMo6 performs excellently under heavy shock and high torque load. It has deeper hardening layer and stronger impact toughness. This material is recommended for heavy machinery, mining equipment and large ring gears working under extreme heavy loads.

Other optional materials include stainless steel for humid or corrosive conditions, and bronze for worm gear pairs to reduce friction.

At Ronjee Gear, our engineering team will recommend the most suitable material according to your working parameters. We provide custom gear machining based on drawings or samples, with full heat treatment and DIN standard inspection.

Send us your gear requirement or drawing, and we will offer free technical evaluation and quotation within 24 hours.
